Our Story

KINOKA is named after 木の香 ki-no-ka — the Japanese phrase for the fragrance of trees.

It is the scent of hinoki cedar after rain.

Bamboo on a cool morning.

The clean, grounding smell of a forest floor.

One of those things that immediately slows you down, that makes you feel, without thinking, that you are somewhere good.

We named our store after it because that is what we want your home to feel like.

KINOKA was started by a Japanese woman who has lived between Japan and the UK, and who knows what it is to come home tired from a city that does not stop.

What we kept coming back to was something very Japanese: the idea that a home should be a place where the nervous system can rest. Not a showroom. Just a room with a few honest things in it — a paper lamp glowing warm in the corner, a ceramic bowl that fits your hands, a quiet object on a shelf — and space to breathe between them.

That is what Japandi means to us. Japanese simplicity, Scandinavian warmth, and the understanding that what you live with shapes how you feel.

KINOKA is a small, carefully chosen collection for people who are tired of noise — the visual kind, the mental kind, all of it — and want to come home to something gentler.

We are not a big store. We do not sell hundreds of products. We sell the things we would want in our own home, the things that earn their place on a shelf and stay there.

If anything here finds your home and makes one corner of your day a little quieter, we have done our job.
